2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 Features and Benefits

MOTOR

Very light, compact, 998cc, DOHC, 16 valves, liquid cooled, 40 degree inclined, in-line four-cylinder, crankshaft "cross" style.

Key elements of this engine design is pioneering "cross plane" crank and uneven firing order. These two functions are used on the Yamaha M1 MotoGP championship winning rider. Note ... This is not a "big bang" engine. The R1 deviates from the standard line 4-cylinder and 180 degrees of adjustment of the crank pins (where the rods attach to the crankshaft), and locates the center two poles on a 90-degree air from the outer cylinder. It means that the crank pins aligned on the same plane (a line through the center of the crankshaft), they line up on two levels in the form of a cross ... or "cutting plane". Liaise with crossplane crank firing order is irregular. An order of traditional cooking, 4-cylinder is generally 1,2,4,3 with a range of 180 degrees. R1 fires the engine cylinders 1,3,2,4 and ranges are mixed in 270 / 180 / 90 / 180 degrees.

What does all this mean for the pilot is the couple as linear as possible, and unbelievable acceleration. The engine design allows a new level of driver - machine communication. One of the biggest advantages is the excellent performance curves allows greater control of the engine.

The goal of engineering is the ability to control R1 ... not only an increase in power. If this were the case, you could simply have increased the power output of the existing engine design that results in a maximum bandwidth of power, difficult to use.

Design 4-valve cylinder head features a compact combustion chamber that uses lightweight, trick titanium valves on the intake side. The 4-valve design maximizes efficiency of breathing and the overall performance of the engine.

Titanium intake valves are 31 mm in diameter and the steel exhaust valves are 25 mm in diameter. Lightweight but very strong VX alloy valve springs, the movement of the valve.

Valve steep angle 11.5 degrees on the intake side and 12.5 degrees on the exhaust to produce a compact combustion chamber.

The titanium intake valves and lighter weight alternative to reduce the intake valves high speed without the worry of the float valve. The use of lightweight "Ti" valves allowed Yamaha engineers to use a size 4 valves per cylinder. In the past, the use of 5 smaller valves allowed a higher rpm limit since each of the "small" valves was relatively light. The use of lightweight titanium now means the engineers no longer have to use the 5-valve design to achieve the same level of revolutions per minute.

The combustion chambers are optimized for maximum engine performance. Compression ratio 12.7:1 is.

Automatic Voltage compact cam chain reduces maintenance and mechanical engine noise.

Short skirt, forged aluminum pistons have a lightweight, high-speed gas and very reliable.

Cross plane crankshaft features 36 mm print for added strength, while the moment of inertia of the handle was up 20% over the previous generation R1.

The rods are carburized and use a nut under design. The lower end "cap" of the bar is in the same room as the top is cracked and later in a process known as "pooling of fractures." This process helps the truly great final round and a bar more accurate dimensions.

Ceramic composite cylinder "holes" are a "liner less" design with a ceramic coating applied directly to the aluminum block to ensure uniform heat dissipation for consistent power delivery, reduced oil consumption, reduced drag and weight reduction.

Closed deck cylinder design allows you to change the cylinders close together, allowing a narrower engine.

Cylinder block is a stand-alone piece (not integrated with the upper crankcase). Advantage is reduced weight and less time engine, which lowers the center of gravity.

A "balance coupling strength" is used to suppress engine vibration for excellent rider comfort.

MCA Compact (generator) is mounted directly on the crankshaft. The compact ACM uses rare earth magnets that produces more power for a given size than conventional magnets, thus reducing the size and weight.

Review of injection systems Mikuni fuel injectors two characteristics (a main game and one of the secondary injectors). This kind of double injection system is also used in our MotoGP M1 and R6. A set of injectors (primary) are in the throttle body 45 mm, while the secondary injectors are in the air box near the intake funnels controlled equipment. The main use of holes reviewed four spray nozzles to maximize fuel atomization process. The secondary injectors, located inside the air box, start running from mid rpm to provide more fuel than necessary.

Fi System is a separate double-track the TPS (position sensor throttle) and APS (accelerator position sensor) sensors

Oxygen sensor is adapted to the exhaust manifold so that such 'closed' fi system, which feeds information to the controller, so adjustments can be made constant air-fuel mixture to improve performance and reduce emissions.

The benefits of injection include excellent throttle response, fuel consumption, reduced emissions, stable idling and no choke to start playing with.

Fuel injection is a lightweight electronic control unit (ECU), use a powerful 32-bit processor for fast control of dosage. The compact design also reduces weight.

YCC-I Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake means or intake ducts / stacks vary in length (2 seats) depending on engine speed. Electronic servomotor varies the length of a long position in a funnel at the bottom center of the RPM is less regulation will improve high-rpm power. The transition between the two is about minutes in length. 9400 RPM. The revolutionary YCC-I, best of both worlds ... Solid Low speed torque and power combined with a run incredibly high speeds. It takes only 0.3 seconds to switch channels long and short positions.

YCC-I Yamaha exclusive electric-control servo-driven variable intake funnel system is the world's first on a production motorcycle, Yamaha and collaborates with fly-by-wire technology and IT systems.

Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) electronic control throttle valve of an exceptional response and improved controllability at all speeds. The YCC-T is used to provide greater control over the volume of intake air to the character of sweet couple. As in the R6 design, the YCC-T features 3 - ECU inside the main ECU to control ignition, fuel injection and the YCC-T. This special ECU is capable of responding to changes at a rate of 1000 of a second.

The rider can "mechanically close" to close the throttle butterfly knob.

All new 6-mode traction control off state property. This system is derived from MotoGP to limit or remove the list, or slide the rear wheel depending on the mode selected. This system uses sensors detect the front and rear wheel slippage and adjusts / regulates the gas through the control unit opens (YCC-T), fuel injection and ignition control pads. The system will be activated switch switches LHS. Each mode offers a different level of slip control.

Long-lived Double Iridium spark plug electrodes are used.

Compact close-ratio 6-speed manual gearbox features gear ratios optimized to maximize performance. "Stacked" 3-axis gearbox / clutch design stacks input / output shafts to create a low center of gravity and keep the entire engine size shorter front to back. Consequently, the stacked design gives engineers the freedom to put the "sweet spot" engine in the body for an optimal balance between weight great handling.

Slipper or back to the group limiting clutch reduces rear wheel hop when difficult moves down when under hard braking. Key benefit is reduced lap times and smoother control when riding aggressively during a race or track day.

Multi-plate clutch using a helical fiber and paper plates.

"Ram Air" system "force feed" the outside air through ducts located next to the dual projector headlights in the intake system. As the speed increases the air velocity in the system increases and pushes the air box. This "force fed" air allows the engine develops maximum power.

Computer optimized large capacity air box maximizes performance. Viscous, high flow air filter is used.

Revised 4 into 2 into 1 into 2 exhaust system titanium increases power, reduces weight and improves aerodynamics. The under-seat dual mufflers aggressive offer. This system contains a 3-way catalyst honeycomb and oxygen sensor. The catalyst reduces emissions of harmful CO and HC exhaust, while the oxygen sensor provides information to the ECU to maintain optimum fuel / air at any time.

Shorty dual mufflers diameter is a large triangular "expansion only" create a sound guy grunt and help focus on the engine. New muffler tips to improve on. The exhaust note is very different from previous models because of the cross-plane crank R1 and irregular firing order ... seems very similar to the Yamaha M1 MotoGP bike.

Compact, high-efficiency radiator curves double ring type fans for maximum cooling efficiency. This curved rad and twin fan design produces more air than conventional flat designs to maintain optimum engine temperature for a constant power.

Large oil cooler keeps the liquid cooled lubricant temperature stable for extended engine life. Convenient cartridge style spin-oil filter.

Convenient clutch cover sight glass for easy oil level inspection.

High-performance direct ignition coils (ignition coil is integrated into the spark plug cap) reduce weight, while the spark plugs and Iridium high-efficiency magneto deliver more spark.

Yamaha D-Mode variable throttle control allows the rider to adjust the properties of the motor based on preferences or driving conditions. Standard mode shows the couple very linear accelerator and feel of the engine. Mode allows the driver to enjoy the sport performance of the engine at low speeds in mid. While B-mode reduces power response for riding situations that require power properties softer. The mechanism of the switch is located on the ERS controlled switch.

New ECU settings to improve the management / control capacity.
