2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 50th Anniversary Edition Features & Benefits
ENGINE
Ultra-light, compact, 998cc, DOHC, 16 valves, liquid cooled, 40 degree tilt, line four-cylinder with crank "cutting plane" style.
Key elements of this advanced engine design are the "crossplane" crankshaft and irregular firing order. These two features are used in the pilot of Yamaha M1 MotoGP championship winner. Please note ... this is not a "big bang" engine. The R1 line deviates from the standard 4-cylinder and 180 degrees of alignment of the trunnions (where the bars attach to the crankshaft), and located in the center two pins in a plane 90 degrees out of the cylinders. This means that the dies aligned in the same plane (a straight line through the center of the crankshaft), align the two planes in the form of a cross ... or "cross-plane". Working crossplane to crank firing is irregular. A traditional firing order on-line 4-cylinder 1,2,4,3 usually with an interval of 180 degrees. R1 fires the 1,3,2,4-cylinder engine and firing ranges are not equal to 270 / 180 / 90 / 180 degrees.
What all this means that the driver has maximum torque linear accelerator and surprising. This design allows the engine to a new level of rider - machine communications. A key benefit is a performance curve and the engine management allows an increase.
The technical objectives for the R1 is controllability ... not only an increase in power. If this were the case, we could have simply increased the power of the current results of engine design in a low power range, difficult to use.
A 4-valve cylinder head design has a compact combustion chamber that uses lightweight, trick titanium valves for the suction side. A 4-valve design maximizes breathing efficiency and engine performance in general.
Titanium intake valves are 31 mm in diameter and the steel exhaust valves are 25 mm in diameter. Lightweight but very strong VX alloy valve springs, the movement of the valve.
Angle Valve steep 11.5 degrees on the intake side and 12.5 degrees on the exhaust to produce a compact combustion chamber.
The titanium intake valves and lighter weight alternative to reduce the intake valves allowing for higher speeds, without regard to float valve. The use of light "Ti" valves allowed Yamaha engineers to use a size 4 valves per cylinder. In the past, has allowed the use of smaller valve 5, an upper rpm since each of the "small" valves was relatively light. The use of lightweight titanium now means the engineers no longer need to use the 5-valve design to achieve the same high speed.
The combustion chambers are optimized for maximum engine performance. Compression ratio 12.7:1 is.
Compact Automatic cam chain tensioner reduces both maintenance and mechanical engine noise.
Short skirt, forged aluminum pistons have a lightweight, high-speed gas and very reliable.
Cross plane crankshaft features 36 mm print for added strength, while the moment of inertia of the handle was up 20% over the previous generation R1.
The rods are carburized and use a small nut design. The lower end "cap" of the rod is made of the same room as the top and is pulled in a process called "fracture splitting". This process aids real big end roundness and greater precision in the dimensions rod.
Ceramic composite cylinder "holes" is a "liner less" design with the ceramic coating applied directly to the aluminum block to ensure uniform heat dissipation for consistent power delivery, reduced oil consumption, reduced friction and reduced weight.
Closed deck cylinder design allows you to change the cylinders close together, allowing a narrower engine.
Cylinder block is a stand-alone piece (not integrated with the upper crankcase). Advantage is reduced weight and less time engine, which lowers the center of gravity.
A "balance coupling strength" is used to suppress engine vibration for excellent rider comfort.
Compact ACM (charger) is mounted directly onto the motor. The compact ACM uses rare earth magnets, which produce more energy for a given size of conventional magnets, which reduces the size and weight.
Review of injection systems Mikuni fuel injectors two characteristics (a main game and one of the secondary injectors). This kind of double injection system is also used in our MotoGP M1 and R6. A set of injectors (primary) are in the throttle body 45 mm, while the secondary injectors are in the air box near the intake funnels controlled equipment. The main use of holes reviewed four spray nozzles to maximize fuel atomization process. The secondary injectors, located inside the air box, start running from mid rpm to provide more fuel than necessary.
Fi System is a separate double-track the TPS (position sensor throttle) and APS (accelerator position sensor) sensors
An oxygen sensor is mounted on the exhaust manifold in a "closed loop" type of FI, which feeds information to the ECU for adjustments can be made air-fuel mixture continuously improve performance and reduce emissions.
The benefits of injection include excellent throttle response, fuel consumption, reduced emissions, stable idling and no choke to start playing with.
Light fuel injection and electronic control unit (ECU) uses a powerful 32-bit processor for fast control of the injection process. The compact design also reduces weight.
YCC-I Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake means or intake ducts / stacks vary in length (2 seats) depending on engine speed. Electronic servomotor varies the length of a long position in a funnel at the bottom center of the RPM is less regulation will improve high-rpm power. The transition between the two is about minutes in length. 9400 RPM. The revolutionary YCC-I, best of both worlds ... Solid Low speed torque and power combined with a run incredibly high speeds. It takes only 0.3 seconds to switch channels long and short positions.
YCC-I Yamaha exclusive electric-control servo-driven variable intake funnel system is the world's first on a production motorcycle, Yamaha and collaborates with fly-by-wire technology and IT systems.
Yamaha Chip Control Throttle (YCC-T) electronically controls the throttle valves for outstanding response and improved controllability at all rounds. YCC-T is used to provide greater control of the intake air volume for more linear torque character. A similar project R6, YCC-T is a 3 - unit inside the main ECU to control ignition, injection and the YCC-T. This special unit is able to respond to changes in the rate of 1000 another.
The driver can "mechanically close" throttling by simply closing the throttle grip.
6 all new traction control system mode is a way off too. The limits of the system derived from MotoGP or remove the rear wheel slip or slide out from the selected mode. This system uses wheel sensors to detect front and rear slip and then adjusts / regulates the exchange through the opening of the throttle (YCC-T), the fuel injection and ignition control of skating. The system is activated by a switch on the gear up LHS. Each offers a different level of control of skating.
Long life Double Iridium spark electrodes are used.
Compact close ratio 6-speed transmission step optimized for peak performance. The "stacked" 3-axis gearbox / clutch design stacks input / output trees to create a low center of gravity and reduces overall engine size shorter front to back. Consequently, the stacked design gives engineers the freedom to place the engine in the "sweet spot" of the image for optimal weight balance for handling awesome.
Slipper or back to the group limiting clutch reduces rear wheel hop when difficult moves down when under hard braking. Key benefit is reduced lap times and smoother control when riding aggressively during a race or track day.
A multi-disc clutch is used, using coil springs and paper plates made from fibers.
"Ram Air" system "force feed" the outside air through ducts located next to the dual projector headlights in the intake system. As the speed increases the air velocity in the system increases and pushes the air box. This "force fed" air allows the engine develops maximum power.
Computer optimized large capacity air box maximizes performance. Viscous, high flow air filter is used.
Revised 4 into 2 into 1 to 2 titanium exhaust system maximizes power, reduces weight and improves aerodynamics. The dual mufflers under the seats offer aggressive. This system includes a 3-way honeycomb catalyst and oxygen sensor. The catalytic converter reduces harmful CO and HC emissions, while the oxygen sensor provides feedback to the ECU to maintain optimum fuel / air mixture at any time.
Shorty dual mufflers with a large diameter triangular an "extension only" type, creating a raucous exhaust note and help the engine character. New muffler tips to improve the style. The exhaust note is very different from R1 previous models because of the crank section plane and irregular firing order ... it seems very similar to the Yamaha M1 MotoGP bike.
Compact, high-efficiency radiator curves double ring type fans for maximum cooling efficiency. This curved rad and twin fan design produces more air than conventional flat designs to maintain optimum engine temperature for a constant power.
Large oil cooler keeps the liquid cooled lubricant temperature stable for extended engine life. Convenient cartridge style spin-oil filter.
Clutch convenient hatch ensures easy oil level inspection.
High-performance direct ignition coils (ignition coil is integrated into the spark plug cap) reduce weight, while the spark plugs and Iridium high-efficiency magneto deliver more spark.
Yamaha D-Mode variable throttle control allows the driver to adjust the performance characteristics of the motor according to the preferences or driving conditions. The standard mode emphasizes the throttle and feel a very linear torque motor. A mode allows the driver to enjoy the sporting performance at low engine speeds and a half. While the B-mode reduces the response to riding situations that require milder power characteristics. The switch mechanism is in the ERS handlebar switch train.
New ECU settings for improved driveability / manageability.
Chassis / Suspension

Deltabox aluminum frame is designed to provide an optimized rigidity balance to maximize handling. This framework is very rigid and rigid steering column, engine mounts and swingarm pivot. In other areas have essentially been carefully removed to allow "tuned flex". The black finish, this frame boasts a compact 1415mm (55.7 ") wheelbase. The position of the swingarm pivot has been optimized to minimize the effect of chain tension at full acceleration, providing a more stable . The engine is a fully stressed chassis member to maximize handling. stability, a key to good handling, is unsurpassed while the ability to keep a hard line acceleration is excellent. The frame contains a mixture of gravity cast ( Doll & engine mount area before and the swingarm pivot), CF (controlled filling) die-cast (rails external tank) and aluminum panels (inner tank rails).
Each of the aluminum parts have different characteristics flex to provide engineers desired balance of rigidity.
Removable CF die cast rear subframe reduces weight magnesium. Detachable design allows access to the rear suspension and is less expensive to repair if accidentally damaged.
Extra-long, lightweight aluminum "lattice" swingarm provides great torsional rigidity for class management, agility and maneuverability leader. The swingarm is cast from lightweight aluminum and CF. The distance between the swingarm pivot and rear axle has been improved (597 mm) for excellent "turn into" the building and the rear wheel traction.
Deltabox This framework offers an incredible 56 degree lean angle.
Fully adjustable 43 mm upside down fork, shock-absorbing films independent left and right. Compression damping is provided through the left leg of the fork, while rebound down the right fork leg. This system facilitates the flow of oil through the oil with a fork and minimizes cavitation (aeration) oil, a performance suspension more stable. Adjustments include 5-way spring preload, rebound and 25-way 25-way compression damping. Front wheel travel is 120mm (4.7 "). Thickness of the inner fork tubes and the external shape of the tubes has been optimized. Adjustable design allows the rider to tailor suspension settings to suit rider weight and road / track conditions to maximize the handling and suspension performance.
